Webtrends Scales out Virtual Data Center with Isilon

Isilon on Thursday announced that Webtrends has deployed Isilon scale-out storage to power its development environments. Using Isilon’s X-Series in combination with VMware vSphere, Webtrends has consolidated more than 700 virtual servers onto a single file system, simplifying storage management and eliminating the data fragmentation and low resource utilization common with traditional SAN and NAS in virtual environments. TrackVia, the Denver cloud-based database outfit, has added a cloud database application development platform that's supposed to make the cloud accessible to non-technical business users by letting them build their own business-critical database-driven applications instead of waiting around interminably for IT or some software developer to conjure something up that probably won't suit anyway. It claims IT won't mind - and might even become corporate champions - because the scalable widgetry is secure, with reliable support and enterprise-class controls. Heck, it means less work for them and no upfront costs. It's supposed to put a very simple user interface on top of a feature-rich relational database that can be securely accessed and shared over the web.

HP Sues Mark Hurd

HP Tuesday sued its ousted CEO Mark Hurd to block him from going to work for Oracle as co-president, a job just announced Monday night. HP has taken its civil case to California’s Superior Court in Santa Clara alleging misappropriation of trade secrets. It claims Hurd can’t possibly do his new job at Oracle without putting HP in peril and complains that it paid him tens of millions of dollars in severance to sit on the sidelines and keep its secrets for two years. It is suing him under a confidentiality agreement, not a non-compete agreement. Non-competes generally don’t get very far in the California courts. Oracle of course must have anticipated that HP would sue and just decided to brazen it out.

Cloud Wars: The 3PAR Strikes Back

A long time ago (November 2009 to be precise), in a Cloud far far away, the Rebel Alliance of EMC, Cisco and VMware joined forces to form what are now dubbed Acadia and the VCE coalition. Soon after came the launches of VBlocks 0, 1 and 2 each respectively incorporating the EMC Celerra, Clariion or VMax with a stack of Cisco blades and switches and a layer of VMware virtualization to suit. Marketed as ‘best of breed’ and ‘ready configured to client specifications’ it was an immediate launch pad for any customer looking to deploy a private cloud with a single pane of management. Whether it was an already mature virtualization infrastructure looking to quickly expand or an organization wanting to enter the virtualization stratosphere with minimum fuss, in house training etc. the VBlock was quickly carving itself a significant market share. Hence no surprise that EMC’s VP of Global Marketing and CTO Chuck Hollis can hardly hide his glee in interviews at the current lack of direct competition to the VCE’s destiny to rule the Cloud’s Galactic Empire. But one should never underestimate the power of the HP side, now counterstriking in their salaciously exciting sweeping aside of Dell and consequent takeover of the brilliant storage platforms of 3PAR. The Cloud Wars begun they have.

Citrix Buys VMLogix

Citrix, which claims to be the most widely deployed cloudware around, in part a factor of running both Amazon and Rackspace, is buying six-year-old VMLogix and its LabManager and StageManager products, old hypervisor-agnostic friends that automate virtualization management in private and public clouds. The widgetry will turn up in Citrix’ OpenCloud infrastructure platform, its tarted-up Xen stack, to help it take on VMware management. Terms were not disclosed. Citrix said it would add lifecycle automation so virtual workloads can migrate between production stages with a single mouse click.

Voltaire Poses Challenge for Cisco

Voltaire has come out with a new top-of-rack switch, a low-latency, high-density 10 GbE switch for virtualization and scaling cloud networks that will be a challenge for Cisco since Cisco doesn’t have anything like it and Voltaire’s pricing the thing aggressively to capitalize on its advantage. It’s not just an issue for Cisco’s switch business. Voltaire OEMs to Cisco’s server rivals, HP and IBM, so if the dingus is as jazzy as Voltaire says it is, it could create a speed bump for Cisco’s data center ambitions. It’s a 48-port widget in a little 1U device, providing non-blocking switching throughput of 960 Gbps at the industry’s lowest power consumption – 6.3 watts/port.

Dell pulled out of the race to acquire 3PAR Thursday morning after HP upped its $30-a-share bid of last Friday to $33 a share, pushing 3PAR's valuation past $2 billion to roughly $2.1 billion. 3PAR sent out a statement Thursday morning saying that Dell went to $32 before the three-day clock ran out on it Wednesday at midnight, and HP countered Thursday morning with $33. The 3PAR board has recognized HP's revised $33 bid as the "superior proposal" and said it told Dell it would go with HP unless Dell put more money on the table under the perpetual matching rights clause in their original deal.

3PAR Sued for Patent Infringement

Within hours of 3PAR maybe finding out who its daddy's gonna be, it got sued by a little Austin, Texas outfit with a litigation trail behind it by the name of Crossroads Systems. The publicly traded Texas company accused 3PAR along with six other storage houses of infringing on its router and data storage patents in the Western District of Texas court in Austin Wednesday, according to the Austin Business Journal.
