Cisco has got a new “close to the user” edge router that can push 250,000 songs or 200 feature films a second. (Figure 6.4 terabytes a second.)
The widget, which starts at $80,000 and reportedly took $200 million to develop, is called the Aggregation Services Router (ASR) 9000 Series and is designed to deliver Internet-scale non-stop video and reduce the carbon footprint.
It can service video and data traffic – Web 2.0 and collaboration stuff – across wireline, cable and mobile networks.
Cisco’s VNI projections predict that IP traffic will increase at a combined annual growth rate of 46% from now until 2012, nearly doubling every two years.
Cisco says that means an annual bandwidth demand on IP networks of ~522 exabytes, or more than half a zettabyte (roughly the number of outfits in your wife’s closet).
This demand on networks, Cisco says, is equivalent to downloading 125 billion DVD movies a month.
Softbank is the 9000’s first customer and Cisco says it’s got the thing in trials at tier one service providers in North America and Europe.
It will be available in Q1.
Cisco is competing with widgetry from Juniper and Redback Networks.
