Oracle Corp has updated the Sun Ray Client product line geared for displaying server-hosted Windows, Linux and Oracle Solaris desktops with a new version Oracle Sun Ray 3 Plus Client that operates on its Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure software. They all stack up nicely with with Oracle’s other desktop virtualization wares like Oracle Secure Global Desktop and Oracle VM VirtualBox.
The new release comes with enhancements including support for Windows 7 virtual desktops, larger displays with native support for up to two 30-inch displays with 2560 x 1600 resolution each enabling user productivity and efficiency, faster I/O with Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0, enabling higher performance, and increased security with native support for fiber optic networking through a Small Form Pluggable (SFP) connection module which provides a more secure environment than traditional copper Ethernet.
Thin clients offer server based computing that only display applications run on dedicated servers. Not only do they not require constant upgrades, reconfigurations, high maintenance ,manpower, and the higher costs that usually go along with all of the above, it saves on cabling and cooling requirements as well . Oracle says Sun Ray 3 boasts an ENERGY STAR 5.0 rating in terms of power requirements.
Oracle's Virtual Desktop Infrastructure software also got a boost as a management console for the Sun Ray clients. The v3.1.1, Oracle says provides wider platform support and increased networking flexibility with VLAN support for Microsoft Hyper-V.
